Google+ — The Underutilized Recruiting Network

HR ideas….from Jeffery Giesener – CEO – SourceMob

Although you may not have considered it, Google+ can be a great social recruiting tool that often flies under the radar.

Think about it: When you go to search for something, such as the nearest chinese restaurant or the answer to the question, “What is the meaning of life?,” what search engine do you use? Most likely, the answer is Google. After all, according to Net Marketshare, Google is the world’s most popular search engine. According to Google, 30% of all searches on their site are now done on a mobile device.

Google has visibility. Therefore, so does Google+.

So, how exactly can Google+ help you with recruiting? Well, to start, it has around 450 million active user profiles, many of which include information concerning users’ careers, interests and professional experience, similar to LinkedIn. In addition, Google+’s “Circles” allow users to keep in touch with coworkers that may have similar interests or experience.

For those recruiting in the tech industry, Google+ can be an especially great resource. According to ERE.net, the majority of Google+’s active users are tech-savvy professionals.

“Technology pros are attracted to Google+ because there are major SEO benefits to having one’s online presence on the search giant’s owned network,” ERE.net reported. “Although Google+ may not be used for recruiting as much as LinkedIn, for the tech recruiter, it is a key social media platform that can be used to connect with influencers and professionals. Google+ plays host to a massive pool of engineers, programmers, developers and designers just waiting to be tapped for a multitude of positions.”

What are you waiting for? To begin tapping this underutilized resource, implement the following strategies:

  1. Create a Google+ Career Page. This should be separate from your company’s marketing-focused page. On it, you can post content geared towards passive and active candidates, such as job postings and blogs geared towards certain positions.
  2. Actively engage with prospects. Just like on other social networks, if a candidate poses a question on your Google+ page, answer it. Letting it go unanswered will put off the prospect (and others that saw you didn’t respond). In addition, actively engaging with prospects forges a relationship, possibly turning a passive candidate into an active one.
  3. Position your company as a thought leader. You can do so by hosting a Google+ hangout for professionals in your industry to network and exchange ideas, or sharing blogs relevant to your niche. Remember, the recruiter-candidate relationship should be a win-win!

At the end of the day, Google+ may be the underutilized resource that could take your recruiting to the next level. Don’t miss out. To learn more about how to use Google Search and Google+ for sourcing just give me a ping by email at jeff@sourcemob.com or call 952-807-8364
