Fortune 500 Increased Use of Social Recruiting — Twitter is #1

…ideas from Jeffery Giesener – SourceMob.com – CEO

Fortune 500 companies have increased their use of social media to reach key constituents, according to the the 5th Annual Benchmarketing Study conducted by the University of Massachusetts, the Center for Marketing Research.

If the stats below are focused on marketing what do you think is going on for HR Marketing? Guess what – this is no longer an early adoption technology for HR but instead already in the main stream for HR Marketing.

Twitter Rules

Twitter is the tool of choice with 73% having corporate Twitter accounts and at least one company from every one of the 71 industries on the list tweeting, according to the statistically valid study.

That was a bit of a surprise, as many brand name consumer companies are successfully leveraging Facebook to sell their brands, their product/services and to build interactive communities.

Facebook is also the 800 pound Gorilla in the recruiting space too with 1.3 Billion profiles.

YouTube is also closing in on Facebook users (62% vs. 66%) among the  Fortune 500 survey.

The most successful companies understand that a blog is an essential component of their social media strategy. Shouldn’t HR Departments think the same?

For the first time this year, the study included specialty blogs that corporations have created to recruit new employees.

Key Findings

Key findings reported by UMass are:

  • 28% (139) of the primary Fortune 500 corporations have an external corporate blog. This is an increase of 5% from the past survey.
  • 54% of the corporate blogs come from companies ranked in the top 200 on the list. Rank influences the use of blogging more than any other tool studied.
  • 66% (332) of the Fortune 500 primary companies have a corporate Facebook page. This is an increase of 8% from 2011. But what about Corporate Career Social Pages on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+?
  • 73% (365) of Fortune 500 primary companies have corporate Twitter accounts. This is up from 11%.
  • 62% (309) of the Fortune 500 primary companies are using YouTube.
  • 23% (115) of the Fortune 500 primary companies have neither a Twitter account nor a Facebook page.  31% had neither.*

Now think about the potential to leverage all the Social Media channels to assist in your Talent Acquisition efforts: To enable the ability to net tough niche areas like IT, Nursing, Pharma, Medical, Sales, Hospitality and much more; To enable your jobs and conversations to go directly into your candidates’ social and mobile networks.

So how do you cast your recruiting net?

Look for a specific social recruiting solution (not a bolt on to your ATS) where your jobs and conversations go directly to your candidates’ personal social pages both privately and anonymously. Then your candidate is positioned to select the jobs they want by job category, relevancy and location. Job descriptions are delivered daily directly to your candidates without any involvement by your IT or HR team. You also should not need to take on more responsibility as social job engine should work totally on Autopilot. Make sure you have a solid social analytics and monitoring platform.

Most Recruiters I speak with have told me that they just don’t have time or staff to do social recruiting Or they don’t know how to do it

Have your career pages been struggling with increasing defection rates? Do you even know?

Defection rates should improve as well as Applies counts because instead of forcing candidates through the difficult ATS funnel to Apply, now candidates can connect with your Recruiters directly through social conversations and your Talent Communities. The world of recruiting is changing real time and you best candidates are taking the control of their recruiting. The result is your Recruiters must now engage with your best and brightest talent and then escort them directly into an Apply instantly. That is certainly a pivot for Talent Acquisition Professionals who want to net Passive and Active Candidates.

What are you doing in Mobile Recruiting?

If you are making the candidate experience on mobile difficult for candidates meaning:

  1. Job descriptions are not easy to read on a mobile device.
  2. Mobile Search from your Applicant Tracking Solution (ATS) is not mobile optimized.
  3. You don’t have a mobile apply process?
  4. Don’t make your candidates Pinch and Zoom to see your job content on their mobile devices.

If you are in any of the 1-4 bucket(s) above, you may be facing 40-90 percent candidate defection from mobile recruiting according to ERE.net and Indeed studies. To know what is happening on your Career sites and social career sites you need to be plugged into analytics tools and to good metrics analysis.

I would welcome the opportunity to personally show you how SourceMob can net Passive and Active Candidates in some of the toughest recruiting areas (IT, Nursing, R&D) without you having to pay recruiting commissions.
