It’s a holly, jolly (mobile) Holiday

From Jeffery Giesener – CEO of ShoppeSimple®

As Forrester told retailers during the 2009 Shop.org Annual Summit, “If you like social, you’re going to love mobile.” But what have merchants and retailers done with mobile in 2010?

Surprisingly not a lot. Check out the facts…

A 2010 Forrester study found that

  • 12% of brands have no mobile marketing plan
  • 57% are still establishing initiatives
  • Nearly 70% of marketing executives do not have a mobile marketing plan in place for 2011 or are only just beginning to create one

All of this is happening despite the fact that sales of Smartphones continue to increase exponentially.

Given that probably mobile marketing is new to your marketing mix:

Do you know how much mobile commerce is actually being done this holiday season?

Do you know how consumers are interacting with your site on their smartphones?

Let’s take a look at one of our ShoppeSimple clients who began their Mobile SaaS program in mid-October 2010 right before the run up of the holiday selling season. As important as their new mobile sales volume this client received insights from their mobile user community. Not only did they gain a new segmentation strategy flagging the 870 buyers as new mobile buyers they also have a completely new view as to what mobile visitors are doing on their site and what smartphone platforms they are usingYou can see all of this on the right sight of the ShoppeSimple analytic report above which is supplied weekly to each of our mobile clients.

Some additional background on this Client Case Study: when we first began our client engagement the client was disappointed with both their iPhone/iPad App sales and site visitations.

Post the ShoppeSimple Mobile SaaS program being added to their marketing mix, looking closely at their analytical data, you can see that their predominately male visitors prefer Blackberry smartphones. You can also see why their iPad users didn’t perform as well. They are 1/3 the visitors of the Blackberry group.

In fact, we have seen the opposite if you have mostly Female buyers as this demo group prefer shopping on their iPhone/iPad’s. Are your site analytics sharing this level of mobile data with you?

The bottom line: The merchant could have prevented spending six figures on iPhone and iPads Apps and instead used the ShoppeSimple Mobile SaaS program to not only develop mobile commerce which they are doing but also determine which Apps they should build and when.

With the use of the ShoppeSimple Mobile SaaS program along with our Analytic and Marketing Services Teams each client has all of their mobile data at their fingertips to support their next phase of the mobile marketing strategy..

Did you know that Amazon hurdled $1 Billion in m-Commerce in August 2010

So isn’t the obvious question to be asked…are you capturing your mobile share of your consumer’s wallet?

A National Retail Federation (NRF) recent study indicates a quarter of consumers said they will use their smartphones to research or make a holiday purchases in 2010. Also Mobile-savvy shoppers will account for $127B, 28% of overall 2010 holiday spending.

To top it off, consumers also mentioned that they planned to use their smartphones phones for major holiday shopping events such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday and collectively 6.9% of consumers planned to use their mobile smartphone to shop. Our analytics showed the same.

If you think these percentages look small today and you can dismiss them, the NRF reports that it translates into over seven million individuals in the US, and that these numbers are almost double those for Cyber Monday last year (if this trend continues next year, that’s an increasingly significant chunk of your customer base). Do you recall the growth trajectory of Facebook?

ShoppeSimple’s Mobile Commerce is generating real sales for our clients everyday. It works! Can you do the same? We have seen similar and dramatic results for each of our client so the odds are likely that we can help you too.

I’d recommend that we set up a time over the phone where we can get to know your specific online objectives. With that understanding we can begin to design a Mobile/Social Commerce program that will fit your company’s unique situation and strategy.

I sense that if you are like other e-Tailers, you may be planning to start investing aggressively in Mobile Commerce. To start the process, just indicate your interest in a no-obligation phone discussion by replying to this email and we will be in touch with you to start the process immediately.

Best Regards,

Jeffery
